Godalming is mentioned in the will of King Alfred the Great, and the name itself has Saxon origins, 'Godhelms Ingus' roughly translated as 'the family of Godhelm', and probably referring to one of the first lords of the manor. Godalming grew in size because its location is roughly half-way between Portsmouth and London, which encouraged traders to set up stalls and inns for travellers to buy from and rest in. The Kings Arms and Royal Hotel is the grand and imposingred brick building photographed above, is one of those. This charming hotel has been recently renovated and blends harmoniously old and new meeting the needs of today travelers. In 1538, Henry VIII forced the owner of a Tudor Palace in Oatlands Park to cede him the title. Although Oatlands Palace (literally named 'lands where oats were grown') was already an established residence, Henry VIII built a sumptuous Palace for the reception of his new Queen, Anne of Cleves. Although she never lived there, it became the home of Elizabeth I, James I, and Charles I, who is believed to have planted the fine cedar tree beside the driveway of the Oatlands to celebrate the birth of his son, Prince Henry of Oatlands. In 1650, the palace was pulled down and the name Oatlands was passed to a former Tudor Lodge, built on the highest part of the park. Around 1716, the 7th Earl of Lincoln built a new mansion. The most notable feature of the gardens of Oatlands was the famous Grotto. Possibly the finest in England, the Grotto, with a ceiling studded with artificial stalactites, was built around 1760 and stands at the Weybridge end of Oatlands Avenue, at the top of Monument Hill, bridge. Sadly demolished in 1948, shells identical to those lining the walls of the Grotto still exist in the wall at the top of the driveway into the car park at Oatlands Park Hotel. | |||||||
